Des Moines Web Geeks

by Andy Brudtkuhl on July 29, 2008

If you are a web geek living in Central Iowa, we are forming a group to get together to discuss all things web. Aside from discussing the latest and greatest technologies we will be using the group as a soundboard to discuss projects we are working on in order to facilitate feedback and brainstorming…

Thanks to Jeremy Harrington (@jharr) for setting up the website and getting the ball rolling… And sorry for my horrible

Potential Topics of Discussion (via website)

Say What?

Des Moines Web Geeks is proposed to be a group of web professionals and enthusiasts looking to meet, share ideas and have some fun. We are currently scouting locations to meet and find some times that work for most folks.

While the intent is that these be casual meetings it’s always great to have some featured topics, presenters or concepts for each meetging. Some topics other similar groups have hosted include:

* XHTML/CSS Primer
* WordPress
* AJAX/Javascript Frameworks
* Content Management Systems
* Developing Social Media Tools
* Google Apps
* Yahoo! Pipes

Some awesome stuff going on in Des Moines

The time has come – say goodbye to IE6

by Andy Brudtkuhl on June 10, 2008

As you may or may not know this site was originally started to persuade web developers to quit supporting IE6. I had written a script that checks the browser and if it was IE6, it was to send the user to GetANewBrowser.com (here) where they would be provided links to download Firefox or Opera. Apparently we jumped the gun but two years later it may be time.

If you are alive and reading this you probably got the jist of Apple’s announcements yesterday. One of the solutions launched is MobileMe, Apple’s .Mac replacement service. I won’t bore you with the details anymore, but I just wanted to let you know: Apple is not supporting IE6 for their web applications for MobileMe.

To use the new web applications, make sure you have one of these browsers: Safari 3, Internet Explorer 7, or Firefox 2 or later.

Scott couldn’t have put it better in his post:

And I’m hoping it’s the beginning of a trend. IE 6 is definitely the most painful browser for us to support – it’s seven years old and doesn’t even fully support the CSS 1.0 standard created in 1996. Microsoft’s done an incredibly poor job of getting users to upgrade. It looks like it’s going to take pressure from big apps like MobileMe to seal the deal.

Down with IE6!
