Tellme – Voice Control for Windows Mobile

by Andy Brudtkuhl on April 29, 2009

I used to love my Windows Mobile phone – until I got an iPhone. That aside – Microsoft has not given up on trying to innovate in the mobile space.

Via their press release…

The new service puts many of the most popular phone functions behind a single button. Windows phone users just press the side button of their phone to:

- Send a text by saying “text” to open a text box, then speak the text message and send to call anyone in their contact list

- Initiate a call simply by saying “call” and then the name of anyone in their contact list

- Search the Web with Microsoft Live Search by speaking your request, such as “weather in San Francisco, California”, “Pizza in Kansas City” or”mother’s day gift ideas”

WordPress Mobile Plugins

by Andy Brudtkuhl on December 3, 2008

There are a couple options for providing mobile views of your WordPress blog. I would highly recommend that you implement one of these two for mobile browsers of your website. This is a growing segment of readership that you do not want to leave behind – especially when it is super easy to adapt your WordPress site for them.

WP-Touch
We just implemented WP-Touch here at GANB and are loving it. It was extremely simple to install, configure, and customize and makes the blog look fantastic on an iPhone or iPod Touch. This is a highly recommended WordPress Mobile Plugin.

WPtouch automatically transforms your WordPress blog into an iPhone application-like experience when viewed from an iPhone or iPod touch. It comes Complete with ajax loading articles and effects, search, login, categories, tags, archives, photos & more, and allows for near-complete customization through your WordPress admin.

MobilePress
MobilePress is a great alternative or complement to WP-Touch as it offers the ability to render on all the most popular mobile platforms. We have not tried this one out yet but it’s on our implementation list.

MobilePress is a WordPress plugin that will render your WordPress blog on mobile handsets, with the ability to use customized themes. The plugin also allows specific themes for specific devices / mobile browsers, such as iPhone, Opera Mini, Windows CE Mobile and other generic handset browsers.

Google Mobile App for iPhone

by Andy Brudtkuhl on November 18, 2008

Wow.

The new Google Mobile App for iPhone makes it possible for you to do a Google web search using only your voice. Just hold the phone to your ear, wait for the beep, and say what you’re looking for. That’s it. Just talk. Once the App is on, you don’t have to push any buttons to search. Check out the video below to watch engineer Mike LeBeau explain how this works.

And if you’re doing a local search, there’s no need to specify where you are because Google Mobile App now has Search with My Location. Search for “movie showtimes” or “Mediterranean restaurant” and you’ll automatically see results based on your current location.
