No Tablet For Me, Thanks

by Andy Brudtkuhl on July 29, 2009

iTablet ConceptOver the last week there has been much discussion on the Apple Tablet and comparisons with the CrunchPad. There have even been discussions on whether an actual market exists for these products – which is similar to discussions in the past regarding netbooks. One person said this is a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist. I agree with that.

Louis Gray is leaning CrunchPad.

Gizmodo says the Apple Tablet has problems.

I for one don’t want a tablet nor a netbook… Here’s why

There are four types of computer hardware that I use regularly…

1. Workstation – big, powerful, multiple screened PC for long periods of work
2. 13″ Macbook – mobile, small form factor, productive
3. iPhone – very mobile, always on
4. Media Centers – group of networked Media Center PC’s hooked up to tv’s and projector

I don’t see where a tablet – or even a netbook – fits into this hardware lineup. As cool as these devices look I cannot see a reason to include them into my mix above. The CrunchPad has been advertised as a “couch device” – something to use while you are lounging around and want to surf the web. I have an iPhone for that. And if I need more – I’ll walk to my home office and grab my laptop. Or, I’ll grab the wireless keyboard and mouse on my coffee table and surf around the web on my media center.

I just don’t see the need for these devices – as cool as they may look.

by Andy Brudtkuhl on February 5, 2009

South By Southwest is in 5 weeks… I’ve never been to one but I’ve started my checklist…

  1. I’m taking about 500 of my social media business cards
  2. Backpack
  3. Flip Cam
  4. iPhone Wall Charger
  5. Power Squid
  6. Camera, Charger, Extra Battery and SD Cards
  7. New pair of Saucony’s (lots of feet time)
  8. New earbuds
  9. Cash Money + Deposit into my no ATM charge debit card (Schwab)
  10. New Pocket Moleskine + Flat Pen
  11. Tide Stick – for when I spill coffee and/or BBQ on myself

What else do I need? What am I forgetting? What is on your checklist? Let us know in the comments!
