Social Business Cards – YouMetAndy.com

by Andy Brudtkuhl on October 27, 2008

Since I started 48Web early this year, I have been thinking about the idea of business cards. I got some standard cards made – with the logo, and my information, and yadayadayada… Same old thing everyone has seen hundreds of times. Business cards rarely have a clear message and are often packed full of information the receiver could care less about. The goal of handing out cards is conversion right? You want to convert that handshake into a contact, a sale, a partner, etc.

I wanted something different that can drive “conversions” while remaining as simple as possible. So I did what we do best – created a website… And YouMetAndy.com was conceived. The idea is simple: to bridge online social networking with offline handshake networking. But instead of just putting my blog address or my twitter id on my standard business cards I thought why not create a online facade to act as a personal landing page to people I meet.

YouMetAndy.com - Social Biz Cards

There are several advantages of this model. First off, it’s trackable. Using analytics I can guage and measure the effectiveness of my handshake networking. For instance, if I go to a conference and hand out these cards I can check the next day to see how many people visited my website. Secondly, you can drive actual conversions. A conversion is the result of meeting someone and is defined by you. It may be a sale, an important contact, etc. By sending them directly to your personal landing page you have an opportunity convert them – with an interactive personal marketing message and providing every way possible for them subscribe to your content – your sales message. Did I mention this is now measurable?

This solution is also customizable – I can tweak the message depending on what group of people I met recently. If I go to a VC conference tomorrow, I’d upload a video demonstrating my products and giving my elevator pitch. If I speak at a conference tomorrow, I can upload my presentation and Flip recordings. It gives me a second chance at converting someone while giving them context that’s much more effective than a piece of paper.

Here’s my video, introducing the YouMetAndy.com …

Inspiration for this idea came from Matt Buchanan… I just took it to the next logical step by creating a measurable social media landing page and actually printed the cards with the URL on them.

UPDATE: We are building a cool web service so you can build your own Social Business Card. Check out SocialCard.Me for additional details…
