Lunascape - A Web Designer Tool

November 25, 2008 by Andy Brudtkuhl · 3 Comments

Are you a web designer that has the luxury frustration of doing cross browser testing? Are you in charge of cross browser testing your websites? Well look no further than Lunascape 2.0. It’s a web browser that allows you to change rendering engines on the fly in one application. You can test what your design looks like in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Chrome. There is also built-in screen scraping so you if you aren’t a designer you can easily send those random IE design issues to your designer much easier.

Pros
- Test all major browsers in one application
- Easily switch between rendering engines
- Built in screen capture
- Built in RSS reader
- Customizable skins
- Plugin Community

Cons
- No Mac version (boooo!)
- No plugin support (sucks for Firefox users)

Blogging With ScribeFire

November 15, 2008 by Andy Brudtkuhl · Leave a Comment

Ever since I started blogging again after my hiatus, ScribeFire has been my tool of choice. It’s a Firefox plugin with a hugely powerful blogging application inside. I can say that it has helped me become a much more efficient blogger and it allows me to quickly write posts.

It has all the features you would expect in a blogging tool. There is a great editor - allowing you to format your posts in several ways. There are buttons to load stuff straight from Flickr and YouTube. You can upload images, tag and categorize posts, post drafts, schedule publishing, and FTP uploads. As you can tell there are some awesome feature. A favortite of mine is the preview feature that allows you to preview the post as if it were on your blog.

ScribeFire Blog Editor enables users to easily drag and drop formatted text from the web into their blog(s), post entries, take notes, and optimize their ad inventory directly through the Firefox browser.

Diigo Groups is Future of Social Bookmarking

November 12, 2008 by Andy Brudtkuhl · 4 Comments

I’ve been loving Diigo since I ditched Delicious a few months ago. They are constantly adding awesome features and today I stumbled on the groups feature. Basically it allows you to create a group of like-minded users (it can be public or private) to share links, comments and it has a forum baked right in.

This is HUGE… It allows you to create micro communities and adds much greater value to “social” bookmarking. You can be a part of multiple groups - which are often topical in nature. There are all kinds of different options that allow you to discuss bookmarks in comment threads and in a forum. There are RSS feeds for each group - so you don’t even have to join one to get some benefit. And there’s a great “slideshow” feature that will allow you to quickly lopp through the bookmarked sites.

If you are a Diigo user (you *have* to be if you do Social Bookmarking) - check out the group I made today - Web Strategy. If you are interested in Web Strategy, Social Media, Internet Marketnig, etc… you are advised to join the group to share great articles and get in on the Web Strategy discussions.

If you aren’t a Diigo user… join today. Then, join our group.

If you still need convicing, read my post or read “7 reasons diigo tastes better than delicious”.

DeskAway - Project Management Solution

November 12, 2008 by Andy Brudtkuhl · 2 Comments

Even though we chose Basecamp at 48Web, I wanted to share with you another very promising project management solution in DeskAway. DeskAway is a hosted project management solution for teams to collaborate on projects and/or activities. I found it to be perfect for freelancers looking for a simple, affordable solution with time tracking baked in. So if you are ready - it takes about 30 seconds to jump in and setup an account. Get more details on DeskAway here.

Features:
- All paid plans have unlimited users
- File Sharing
- Document Creation and Sharing
- Time Tracking on all plans
- Branding on paid plans
- Full export and backup

DeskAway has a lot of great features at an affordable rate. I’d definitely check out their free plan if you are in the market for a project management solution. Their free plan offers far more features for free than comparable plans. If you are a freelancer who needs to manage a few projects with clients and track time, their free plan is perfect.

Do you use DeskAway? Let us know how it is in the comments…

5 Project Management Solutions

November 11, 2008 by Andy Brudtkuhl · 9 Comments

Or… why we chose Basecamp for our project management needs…

For the last two years we have been using ProjectPier for project management. We chose it primarily because it is open source, and free. We could customize the design to match our branding and we owned all the data. Over the last week we have been trying to “systematize” our processes and have been readdressing our project management needs. We reviewed the following platforms in an effort to find the best fit for our needs and budget.

  1. ProjectPier
  2. Basecamp
  3. CentralDesktop
  4. activeCollab
  5. Zoho Projects

Our requirements were as follows:

  • Web-Based
  • Under $50/mo
  • Minimum Hassle
  • Multiple Projects and Users
