Today was a good day for Microsoft as they announced two strategic partnerships with Atlassian and NewsGator. The partnerships revolve around Microsoft’s Sharepoint product. If you aren’t in the *enterprise* loop or affiliated with an IT shop you may not know what Sharepoint is.. Basically it’s a collaboration suite / portal / CMS / Business Intelligence / etc… It’s a very cool (and very expensive) suite of tools.

Today’s announcement is to add Atlassian’s wiki collaboration product, called Confluence, into the Sharepoint stack. The plugin, to be released today, allows information to be shared between the Confluence enterprise wiki software and Microsoft’s Sharepoint.

NewsGator fits in the mix with their Social Sites product built specifically for Sharepoint. This adds some additional functionality to SharePoint including Reader and Feed Management web parts, social networking features, improved RSS capabilities, tagging, and more.

Oh, and Microsoft calls Web 2.0 “Social Computing“. Read more about it here.
