From the government that brought you a “Do Not Call” list brings you the “Do Not Track” list.

As you are aware a few years ago the government instituted the “do not call” list to curtail the ability of telemarketers to solicit phone calls to whomever they want. People could call an 800-number and have their phone number(s) added to the list so that telemarketers could not legally cold-call them.

Several online entities, including AOL, are trying to create universal “opt-out” lists so consumers can, well, opt-out of being “tracked” online. But as Chris Anderson pointed out in his controversial post yesterday - often clicking the “unsubscribe” button just lets a spammer know that the account is indeed active and they should put you on a separate list - one of know active email addresses.

APM’s Marketplace covered this briefly this morning.
