*Announcing* Stream Of Conversation

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

When Mike asks you to do something, you must do it.

In any case here is Stream Of Conversation, an aggregator using Mike’s Age Of Conversation OPML file. It provides a stream of posts from all the authors of AOC.

What is AOC?

In what began as a half dare, the editors, Gavin Heaton and Drew McLellan challenged bloggers around the world to contribute one page — 400 words — on the topic of “conversation”. The resulting book, The Age of Conversation, brings together over 100 of the world’s leading marketers, writers, thinkers and creative innovators in a ground-breaking and unusual publication.

Published through Lulu.com, the online self-publishers, the proceeds from the sale of the book (cost less printing and publisher’s commission) go to Variety, the Children’s Charity. The editors of, and contributors to, this book have waived their rights to royalties in support of this charitable cause.

The book is available in hard cover, soft cover and e-book formats.

If you are interested in your own community / aggregator, shoot me an email at andy[at]simplifive.com and we’ll talk.

** It feels good to launch two things in one day, even though SOC only took a couple hours **

*Announcing* Fresh Feeds

Fresh FeedsAny of you that know us know we’ve had this product in the kitchen for quite some time. It’s scope has changed from simply creating an OPML file and letting the user download it to actually discovering, parsing, and generating mashed up feeds. So, here goes…

Fresh Feeds is not a search engine. Fresh Feeds is an awareness engine . It finds recent items published, mostly in the new media realm, and packages the results up in an RSS feeds and delivers it to the subscriber.

Fresh Feeds is not perfect. There is still a lot of noise. But, I felt this is a valuable tool as-is and thus it is “releaseable”. Noise is and will forever be an inherent problem on the web and is especially so since the advent of new media technologies where there is an exponential amount of content being published.

Fresh Feeds is not complete. Once I publish this post I am going to start working on rewriting it for better performance, reliablility and relevance.

Fresh Feeds was inspired by Mike Sansone’s methodology he coined ‘Search Once and Subscribe’. In his post he describes a process for monitoring your name, company, keywords, etc. We call this awareness. So we mashed up all the sources he discussed and create one feed based on your term - saving you even more time.

If you have any feedback on the service, please email feedback[at]getfreshfeeds.com. If you have some issues or something doesn’t work right, email support[at]getfreshfeeds.com.

And as usual if you have anything else or wish to advertise on Fresh Feeds, email me at andy[at]simplifive.com.

Enjoy!

Friday Video

It’s that time of the week - here’s your friday video. I wanted to post a different one that is very NSFW but hilarious nonetheless. Check out Internet Commenter Business Meeting. But while you are here, watch The 305.

CSS Off - Judge

CSS Off. It is a contest where we provide a photoshop mockup and then we judge and award a prize to whomever gives back the best html version.

I’ve been talking with everyone involved and it sounds like it should be really fun. Thanks to JD Graffam and Tony White for having me on the panel.

A little more about the contest…

  • To actively engage the web community in web standards with an emphasis on valid, semantic markup
  • To emphasize good web design as an integral part of the development process
  • To use the contest as an opportunity to teach

Ballmer should pull a Jobs

Windows Vista

With a report about to be released from NDP group noting a sharp decrease in Vista sales I think Ballmer should pull a Jobs and induce a price cut.

Don’t get me wrong - I love Vista. But for the $200 OEM version with the ability to only install on a single machine I don’t want to buy it. I’d pay that much for the volume license edition with which I can install multiple times on multiple machines.

In many instances it’s about the same price to buy a new computer with Vista on it than to buy the retail boxed version of the operating system.

So, Ballmer - If you want to sell more retail versions of your OS you will either have to lower the price or give a little when it comes to licensing. Or you can sit back and watch Dell sell PCs with Ubuntu on it for the same price as your operating system.

Jobs did it, why can’t you?
