A la carte TV

by Andy Brudtkuhl on September 21, 2007

I love the idea of an a la carte tv subscription model. I don’t have cable because I don’t want to pay $60+ for 95 channels I won’t watch. So I find alternative methods of watching what I want (*cough* bit torrent *cough*). Apparently I’m not the only one interested in this as there is a class action lawsuit being filed by people who want it. They claim, “it’s a violation of antitrust law that they don’t offer a la carte channel selection.”

Mike makes two good points in his Techdirt coverage:

1) Studies have actually shown that in most cases a la carte offerings would end up costing more.

2) Either way, with the pace of change, it won’t be all that long before this doesn’t matter anyway — and the entire concept of the channel is dead. We’re reaching a time when people will simply subscribe to shows, and no one will worry about channels any more.

Great points Mike.

Big Week for Google

by Andy Brudtkuhl on September 18, 2007

It’s been another big week for Google with several updates and product launches.

First off, Google Docs officially has “Presentation” support – which is Google’s answer to Powerpoint and the last piece of their “office” suite. I won’t bore you with the details, so check out Compiler’s review.

Google Reader came out of beta and is now an official product with multilingual support fresh of their recent update with new features. This lends itself to the rumors floating around about upcoming Reader features, including Social Network management among others.

Goog411 is out of beta now and has its own webpage, along with an introductory video. If you aren’t familiar with this feature, it’s kind of like the Google SMS Local system they have…

You don’t need a computer, an Internet connection, or even the keypad on your phone or mobile device. GOOG-411 is voice-activated, so you can access it from any phone (mobile or land line), in any location, at any time. For free.

Dial (1-800) GOOG-411. Say where. Say what you’re looking for. GOOG-411 will connect you with the business you choose.

If you are calling from a mobile device, GOOG-411 can even send you a text message with more details and a map. Simply say “Text message” or “Map it.”

Yesterday while surfing the web on my Blackjack I noticed ‘Sponsored Ads’ in a search results. I had heard they were launching a mobile advertising platform and now it appears it’s official. Google AdSense for mobile has officially launched. More on this later…

Amazon Launches Affiliate Widgets

by Andy Brudtkuhl on September 17, 2007

I am currently doing research (maybe for some sort of e-book) of which the final product is some sort of formula or methodology for developing money-making websites (i know, many people have done the same). Where I am trying to differentiate it is by not creating spam and using traffic arbitrage techniques to drive niche traffic to niche websites.

In any case Amazon Associates is beginning to show itself as the best ROI (although AdSense is slowly catching up). I was very impressed by the virtual storefront that you can create.

Today they announced the addition of some cool new widgets including an UnBox widget and Slideshow widget.

If you are interested in making money yet not cluttering up your website, consider an Amazon Associate program. You can provide relevant products like books, dvds, music, etc to your readers.

Here is an example Amazon Associate widget containing some of my favorite web development books. Make sure and buy them all :)
