With a report about to be released from NDP group noting a sharp decrease in Vista sales I think Ballmer should pull a Jobs and induce a price cut.
Don’t get me wrong - I love Vista. But for the $200 OEM version with the ability to only install on a single machine I don’t want to buy it. I’d pay that much for the volume license edition with which I can install multiple times on multiple machines.
In many instances it’s about the same price to buy a new computer with Vista on it than to buy the retail boxed version of the operating system.
So, Ballmer - If you want to sell more retail versions of your OS you will either have to lower the price or give a little when it comes to licensing. Or you can sit back and watch Dell sell PCs with Ubuntu on it for the same price as your operating system.
Jobs did it, why can’t you?

1It would be great indeed. But has Microsoft ever lowered a price?

2Good point David. They’ve lowered the price on hardware before but I am unaware if they have done that on the software side. Why can’t Vista just be, like, $99?

3I think a price cut would get Vista into enough hands where people would see how huge of an upgrade it really is.

4Stefan - Good point. Many people think it’s just another version when in fact its a complete overhaul.
