Vista Media Center – Internet TV Beta

by Andy Brudtkuhl on September 28, 2007

Microsoft launched their Internet TV Beta this morning. It’s definitely a great step forward for an a la carte tv model. I love Vista, especially running media center on my big screen :)

On Noise and YouTube

by Andy Brudtkuhl on September 27, 2007

Noise Busters picture from noise-busters.comWith all the great things being produced because of new media technologies there is one caveat – noise. Noise is all the crap out there that gets in the way of the signal (the messages you are interested in).

Noise is a hard problem to solve because it is subjective. For instance, gossip news (celebrity, valleywag, etc) is pure noise to me and forces me to have to ignore things – which takes time. Yet, many people seek this *information* which I deem as noise.

That is why many of the best websites / communities out there recommend things to me based on behavior. Netflix knows if I will like a movie based on my 700+ ratings and lets me know that whenever I visit the website. Amazon does the same as it knows my shopping habits and what I am in the market for at a given time.

I want more of that. I want YouTube to tell me what videos to watch instead of me having to sift through hours of crap. And, I want Google Reader to bubble up what I want to read right away instead of forcing me to read stuff I don’t care about – like Searchfox used to do (RIP Searchfox).

I’ve read about FeedHub and will be taking a look at it, however there are high switching costs when it comes to me and RSS feed readers. I also want a video site (talking to YouTube here) to take my ‘favorites’ and ‘rankings’ and use it to filter out the 90% of garbage I deal with when using your service.

[This all came up as I've been meandering around YouTube for tomorrow's Friday Video]

Amazon MP3 Store

by Andy Brudtkuhl on September 27, 2007

… is much better than iTunes for the simple fact that I can do anything with the music purchased – which is how it SHOULD be. I won’t regurgitate the news because you’ve probably already heard or read about it.

On a side note there is one thing missing – As an avid Amazon Affiliate I want the opportunity to sell MP3′s via affilate much like I do albums and books.

Like Fred, I love Amazon. Also like Fred – it is my shopping mall where I buy pretty much everything but groceries… for now.

*Announcing* Fresh Trends

by Andy Brudtkuhl on September 26, 2007

Google recently updated (Monday, Sept 24) their Google Trends site to update daily and began offering an RSS feed every hour of the current hottest search trends on Google. So, I saw a unique opportunity to mash together our very own Fresh Feeds awareness engine with Google Trends, providing a *stream* of trends with associated discussions in the new media realm.

The mashup, called Fresh Trends, launched this morning. There is plenty more that I want to do with this so what you see is just the beginning but I wanted to get it out there as fast as possible (it was a little under one day of work to put it together).

What’s great is as we work on the noise issues with Fresh Feeds, the discussions we bring back about the trends will be more and more relevant – as well as the speed of retrieval. There is much potential in this mashup so I should have fun dreaming up fun new features. As always, we’d like to know what you think here in the comments.

Enjoy
