“Hello World!”
As I’ve discussed before hackers all over have been burning the midnight oil attempting to gain access to the inner workings of the iPhone. They have succeeded in running their first “Hello World” application, opening the floodgates for development of third party applications, which is not supported by Apple. If you are unfamiliar, “Hello World” applications are generally the first thing a developer builds when working in a new platform or programming language. The idea is to have the application say hello, signifying that the process works. And this has been accomplished.
Business Week has a good rundown on the progress this group is making. You can also track this at the developers wiki…

Hopefully an SDK and an easy way to load these “true” 3rd party apps will be available in the future when this becomes more mature. Although since this won’t be condoned by Apple, each 3rd party app may break with each iPhone OS update released.
Yea, that’s why I’m hoping Apple embraces a marketplace model like iTunes for third party applications. That way they can control them while the developers can easily monetize.
