On Des Moines and Fast Company

by Andy Brudtkuhl on July 9, 2007

I know, I’m late and other CIB’s also covered it but I thought I’d throw in my three cents.

Fast Company recently named Des Moines, IA (home to tj and i) a ‘City on the Verge‘ of becoming a ‘High Tech Hot Spot‘. Sweet! So now what? There aren’t any cool jobs for many reasons which will limit the ‘High Tech’ growth (pounding out COBOL for 8 hours a day does not constitute High Tech for this guy).

Mitch made a great point that I couldn’t agree more with of which I hinted at when I said we needed more cool jobs. Cool jobs come from exciting companies. Exciting companies are lured through fostering entrepreneurs and funding. Des Moines does the first half of that well. And as Mitch said,

We have the talent and desire here…just not a free flow of capital to “try things out”. Proven business? Great! Here’s a wheel loader full of cash! Business plan for something revolutionary? Next please.

Brett also does not see where they are coming from. If we were living in a fast growing tech city don’t you think the bloggers would know about it. More on this as we try to accomplish the second half …
