It is inevitable - hackers all over the country have been burning the midnight oil since last Friday with one goal - hacking the iPhone. Surprisingly (or not) they have accomplished a lot over the last few days, like

  • Running code via security exploit in the iPhone’s Safari browser
  • Bluetooth fuzzing to render the device unusable
  • Discovered password to gain root access to device (although have not actually gained access…yet)

These hackers have even formed a wiki to track and document their conquests. The goals are to:

  • Break DMG Password
  • Break Activation
  • Unlock Phone
  • Run 3rd Party Applications
  • Allow DUN/Tethering
  • Remove IMEI Transmitting
  • Enable Disk Mode

What’s the latest scoop?

10:53 <@gj> ok
10:53 <@gj> 10:59am
10:53 <@gj> update
10:53 <@gj> we have been successful in a number of endeavors in the past 12
hours
10:54 <@gj> we can read files on the phone but we’re in a sandbox
10:54 <@gj> we’re pretty sure we can break out, most of the guys didn’t sleep
for over 24h yesterday so they are resting now
10:54 <@gj> we can call services on the phone but can’t yet stop the firewall
10:55 <@gj> we can spoof itunes and mobiledevice very easily now
10:55 <@gj> specifically we need someone really good at function prototyping
10:55 <@gj> but other than that
10:55 <@gj> we are moving right along
10:55 <@gj> i am not sure but I think we have broken activation
10:55 <@gj> need another few words on that to make sure I am right
10:55 <@gj> unlocking is still on the horizon
10:56 <@gj> we need to get real access to the phone first
10:56 <@gj> and while we have limited access
10:56 <@gj> we don’t really have the keys to the castle yet
10:56 <@gj> i’ll update again in a few hours after some folks have woken up and
we have done some more work
