AOL News Relaunches

by Andy Brudtkuhl on June 26, 2007

If you’ve had time to siphen through all the iPhone hype over the last few days you may have heard that AOL relaunched their news portal. But lucky for you its not good enough to take you away from staring at iPhone pictures.

Supposedly the site was redesigned with a ‘blog mentality’. According to Reuters’ coverage,

Time Warner Inc. plans to launch a test of its overhauled news portal on Tuesday, drawing influences from the uncluttered design of popular Internet blogs.

The online division of the world’s largest media company said it aimed to keep readers returning and to introduce a new generation of media consumers to the site by offering more interactive features such as polls and voting features and user-created news on one page.

Like all other like minded news/media websites doing redesigns it almost blatantly copied the excellent design of New York Times’ website. The design is quite nice, but I think NYTimes is one of the best designed sites I’ve seen this year and anything that copies it looks pretty good. This design ‘template’ is getting fairly standard but you can’t go wrong with clean and neat.

It seems they are trying many of the same things that other news sites like Newsvine have perfected. If you ask me – I’d stick to Google News, Newsvine, Reuters, New York Times, or TechMeme.

Should you visit? I dont think so. The two top stories today on AOL News: Paris Hilton and Chris Benoit. If I wanted meaningless “news” I’d watch CNN.
