If you’re not familiar with the term Intranet - it’s used to describe internal-only websites primarily used by companies.
Colleague and fellow Central Iowa Blogger Doug Mitchell has recommended Central Desktop to me a few times. I am planning on looking into it as an alternative to activeCollab when time, money, and needs warrant.
But shortly after our last CIB meeting where he discussed with me how he uses it I read an interesting post from Richard MacManus of Read/Write Web. It was about Central Desktop’s recent announcement of a “turnkey” intranet solution.
From their announcement:
“Right out of the box, users will have a powerful, fresh Intranet that complements their project-centric workspaces and wikis”, said Isaac Garcia, CEO of Central Desktop. “Our research showed that most of our customers were already using Central Desktop as a departmental or team Intranet to share bookmarks, files and company announcements, so we decided to make it easier for them.”
Also check out MacManus’s analysis and question - Is this the Age of Instant Intranets?
Looks like I’m going to have to jump in and give the free plan a shot. It’s going to be hard to beat the freeness to feature ratio of activeCollab - but I sure do like what I hear. Word on the street is activeCollab is heading in the same direction (subscription based software as a service). So who knows, maybe I will be in the market sooner than I thought.

1Hi,
I would just like to point out that activeCollab will not move to hosted service model as you said. It may be provided, but primary distribution model will remain installable software.
Thanks!
