Photoshop on the web

by Andy Brudtkuhl on March 1, 2007

Adobe is taking Photoshop to the web with an ad supported, hosted version of its popular graphics application.

The online service is part of a larger move to introduce ad-supported online services to complement its existing products and broaden the company reach into the consumer market, Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen told CNET News.com.

Like Adobe Remix, the hosted Photoshop service is set to be free and marketed as an entry-level version of Adobe’s more sophisticated image-editing tools, including Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Chizen envisions revenue from the Photoshop service coming from online advertising.

This is obviously a bid for the company to move its applications online to attract the growing audience of consumers wanting to do traditional desktop tasks through a web-based service. I imagine it will mimick the freemium model made popular by 37Signals and now adopted by Google.

I would bet that we’ll see a version of Dreamweaver on the web from Adobe within the year.
