I want this job

Microsoft’s recent hire Michael Gartenberg leaves right away. They hired him as the evangelist for Microsoft leading their brand foray in the blogosphere. He was to pick up where Scoble left off.

But after being a tech analyst for years, he decided that’s what he wanted to do - not be an evangelist.

Hey Microsoft - if you hire me for this position I promise I’ll stay. C’mon - I write about you all the time anyway, it’d be nice to be paid for it.

Virb

There are posts all over the ’sphere’ today about the launch of VIRB. For those of you who aren’t familiar with what VIRB is:

“Virb is a community website that combines social interaction with music and entertainment exploration. It’s a great way to keep in touch and meet people with similar interests. Use Virb to discover music, videos, cool companies and organizations… then share what you find with your friends.

Virb was created by the same folks who made PureVolume.com.”

As you can see in the last sentence, it was created by the guys who did Purevolume. And if you visit VIRB, you’ll see the uncanny resemblance between the two. Ryan Sims did a great job on the design.

I signed up for an account (since they never got me a beta) today. I’m not going to go into all of the normal social ‘networky’ things I saw and explain all the features, but I am going to run through something I liked very much; the customization page for the visual appearance of your VIRB homepage.

You can fully customize the styles (I put a screen up on my flickr) and the basic page layout (I put a screen up on my flickr).

I really enjoyed the real-time preview of what your page will look like when you are styling your custom ‘VIRB page’. And the drag and drop of elements on the basic layout page is great and very handy when it comes to user friendliness.

I’m not too sure how well this will be accepted in the social music/video network since it is very over saturated as it is. But I wouldn’t have thought that Purevolume could stick it out with the big guns (ie* Myspace / Mp3.com to name a couple) and they are doing great (best design out of the bunch in my eyes too).

What will the future of VIRB be? Will they die once the hype is over? We will find out. I will be interested in seeing what else they bring to the table down the road to stay competitive and sharp.

What is RSS?

When will the average person know the term ‘RSS’ like they do ‘E-mail’? Tomorrow? 5 Years from now? EVER?

Why I won’t buy an iPhone - yet

Guy Kawasaki wrote a good post yesterday called ‘Great Expectations‘ - about the iPhone. He has a few questions about the iPhone that attempt to break through the hype to get real answers. I’ve stated that I want one - but I also want a lot of things. So here are my reasons why I WONT buy an iPhone - yet.

1. I have a year old 30gb Video iPod. So, I can already do all the non-phone features included with the iPhone.

2. There are so many other gadgets I would rather have for $600

3. I’m a Windows kind of guy. My current smartphone runs Windows Mobile 5 - and I want to get on Windows Mobile 6.

4. Don’t tell the gadget geeks on me - but sometimes I just want a phone that’s a good phone - nothing else.

5. I don’t really want to try a first version of a hardware product. I waited to get an iPod until the 5th generation. Not to mention the 2nd gen iPhone will most likely be out within at least a year of launch this June. This means there will be a much better version out of your $500 toy.
