I’ve written about Reed Hastings before and needless to say he is a brilliant businessman. And not only would I want to work for him just to learn - this is just the icing on the cake…
When it comes to vacation, Netflix has a simple policy: take as much as you’d like. Just make sure your work is done.
Wow. Here’s some advice to you CEO’s and perspective business owners out there - If you have or want to lure the top young talent to your company, adopt this principle. If I had this over my head I’d work overtime to get a project done knowing that the earlier I get it done the quicker I get days off (that is if I was ever working on less than five simultaneous projects).
I’ve written before about adapting to changes in business processes to adhere to expectations of us twenty-something knowledge workers. Eighties business models and management practices don’t work with us and I guarantee your level of retention is very, very low. Yes, we will pick up and move in the drop of the hat.
There’s a pretty simple equation: Respect + High Morale = Increased Productivity. It’s a wonder how many executives just don’t get it (prime example Bob Nardelli).
In other news that company in Redmond, WA that I also would love to work for also sees the brilliance in Reed Hastings as they just appointed him the Board of Directors.

1This was a perfect post for me.
One, because I believe you are right about the “pretty simple equation”.
Two, because I am leaving for Tulsa this morning to address the Business Marketing Association on the subject of employee engagement.
As always…thanks for stirring things up.
Keep creating,
Mike

2Thanks Mike! As always, good to hear from you.
I think the equation is fairly universal. I’ve worked for companies who didn’t respect me and fostered an environment of low morale. What sucked is I actually like the job and the people I worked with. But the environment was just so upsetting I didn’t care if I got anything done.
Good luck in Tulsa and travel safe.
