I want to work for Reed Hastings.

by Andy Brudtkuhl on March 28, 2007

Reed Hastings

I’ve written about Reed Hastings before and needless to say he is a brilliant businessman. And not only would I want to work for him just to learn – this is just the icing on the cake…

When it comes to vacation, Netflix has a simple policy: take as much as you’d like. Just make sure your work is done.

Wow. Here’s some advice to you CEO’s and perspective business owners out there – If you have or want to lure the top young talent to your company, adopt this principle. If I had this over my head I’d work overtime to get a project done knowing that the earlier I get it done the quicker I get days off (that is if I was ever working on less than five simultaneous projects).

I’ve written before about adapting to changes in business processes to adhere to expectations of us twenty-something knowledge workers. Eighties business models and management practices don’t work with us and I guarantee your level of retention is very, very low. Yes, we will pick up and move in the drop of the hat.

There’s a pretty simple equation: Respect + High Morale = Increased Productivity. It’s a wonder how many executives just don’t get it (prime example Bob Nardelli).

In other news that company in Redmond, WA that I also would love to work for also sees the brilliance in Reed Hastings as they just appointed him the Board of Directors.

Internet Security Trends

by Andy Brudtkuhl on March 23, 2007

Symantec recently released their 2007 Internet Security Threat Report. Here are some highlights from the report.

1. Microsoft has the most secure Operating System

2. The government sector accounted for 25 percent of all identity theft-related data breaches

3. Microsoft Internet Explorer was targeted by 77 percent of all attacks specifically targeting web browsers. (Maybe you should Get A New Browser?)

4. Home users account for 93 percent of all targeted attacks

5. MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Games) are the next big target for phishing scams. That means you Second Life and World of Warcraft.

Blogger = Spam Heaven

by Andy Brudtkuhl on March 23, 2007

Blogger, the blog publishing system owned by Google, is in trouble. A recent study coming out of Microsoft Research called ‘Spam Double-Funnel: Connecting Web Spammers with Advertisers‘ (pdf) claims 75% of Blogspot blogs are spam. (Blogger runs on the blogspot domain)

I find this funny since Chris Pirillo called them out in October 2005 for this exact issue.

The woes of an RSS hacker

by Andy Brudtkuhl on March 23, 2007

RSS

I’ve been developing web applications built on the RSS platform for just under two years now and I gotta say – sometimes it is painful. For a platform whose acronym means “Really Simple Syndication” and is built upon the idea of easily publishing and consuming content – it is surprisingly difficult to work on. Unfortunately there is no one person or company to go to and say, fix this.

The problem lies in the hands of many – from publishing platform providers (a la Typepad, WordPress, Blogger) to the content providers (you and me). We’ve been working on an iowa blog networkIowa Blogs (yes, that’s a sneak peek) for a little while now along with some other communities as well as RSS based applications we are developing. Here are some of the most common problems with using syndication platforms as platforms for web applications (web 3.0 ?).

Catchup on your March Madness

by Andy Brudtkuhl on March 23, 2007

I haven’t got to watch the games this year the same style as last year but they have been excellent. Anywho I fell asleep during the Ohio State vs Tennessee game last night after being exhausted from a road trip to Eastern Iowa yesterday.

So what did I do when I woke up? I went to YouTube to watch the highlights, and see who won. I don’t have cable, so YouTube is my ESPN.

If you need to catchup, go check out CBS Sports’ page over on YouTube.
