Why Firefox is better than IE 7: Reason #1

by Andy Brudtkuhl on November 22, 2006

I plan on writing a series of posts of why Firefox 2.0 is better than Internet Explorer 7.0 (no link, sorry).

Firefox 2.0 vs IE 7

Reason #1: Extensibility

Granted, both camps offer add-ons but the value created by Mozilla and its vast community of users far surpasses that of Microsoft’s with Internet Explorer.

The Firefox community provides thousands of add-ons from those targeted at developers and average web surfers. And if you are a developer, like me, you will find the add-ons provided to Firefox are extremely valuable when designing and debugging web sites. The other advantage Firefox has in this department is the one-click and restart installation that’s soo easy to do.

Installation of add-ons in IE 7 is too complex for it to be adopted by 90% of its user base. Not to mention there aren’t near as many available for consumers or developers. And what’s this? Some of them cost money!!! I don’t know about you but I’m not about to drop $50 for an IE7 add-on.

If you absolutely have to use IE7, than you should invest in these extensions:

Inline Find – Adds Find functionality similar to Firefox

Delicious – Adds delicious bookmarking functionality much like Firefox’s

Internet Explorer Add-Ons

Liberated Films – YouTube of Independent Film

by Andy Brudtkuhl on November 21, 2006

The image “http://liberatedfilms.com/images/nav/logo.gif” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

I love independent movies. In my mind the best movies win independent film festivals, not Oscars. There are many great places to find good indie films, one of my favorite being Netflix because of their wide range of selection and indie fan community. You can also find great stuff on Google Video, YouTube, and others. But the problems with some of those sites is, dare I say, they have too much content. Don’t get me wrong – I am a proponent of user generated content and social media but when I want to find something that’s good fast I do not go to YouTube.

What’s the answer? Liberated Films. According to their website, their mission is as follows:

Liberated Films is an online film community. We have three goals that are focused around ‘Liberating’ filmmakers, film enthusiasts, and those less fortunate.

These are not your average YouTube videos with some teenage girl spouting angst into her webcam. These are well produced films with stories and purpose.

Some fine examples from Liberated Films:

The Vanished

Circle of Freaks

Concerned Lady for America

MP3.COM is Back!

by tjmapes on November 17, 2006

I’m not sure if everyone has seen the new MP3.COM lately besides me , but if you haven’t, go check it out right now (mp3.com). I’ll wait…

Ok good, your there. Anyways… Remember when MP3.COM was the first place you went to find new music? I sure do. On the sad day that MP3.COM said goodbye (or its userbase did), new outlets for rock’s greatness submerged, ie: Purevolume.com and MySpace (holds back from negativity). We all know and love these sites, but today is the day to go back and take some notice at what’s stirring up over at MP3.COM.

Besides all the amazing videos, pics, charts, etc etc… the one thing I wanted to post about and the thing you’ll hopefully notice right away is the amazing advertising strategy they have developed over there. You’ll notice the FULL PAGE WALLPAPER advertisements going on in the background of the homepage, and a few others (click through the navigation to see). Full, fluid, gorgeous background advertisements for the likes of Best Buy, Air Force, and the new K5 mp3 player from Samsung.

I will just leave this saying for one, this is absolutely genius.
Two, advertising on the web, has been taken to a new level. Great work MP3.COM!

YouTube Down For Maintenance

YouTube Down For Maintenance

I read that YouTube would be rolling out a number of “new and exciting features” over the next few months after collaboration with Googlers as a result from the recent acquisition. Looks like they are rolling out the first phase of that now.

What will it be? Google Integration? We’ll see.

Information Cleansing

by Andy Brudtkuhl on November 14, 2006

Over the last few weeks I have had a bad case of information overload due to the amount of noise I have been finding every time I open Google Reader. I’ve discussed this and decided to ignore it. What’s the best way to ignore it?

Feed cleaning time.

I’ve unsubscribed to noisy blog networks like Techcrunch, GigaOm, Gawker, etc because they provide little to no value to me. I cut down my subscription number by around 25 and I can already see much more signal getting through.
