Ever wonder what goes on inside Google? Or how Google works? What is it like to work at one of the coolest companies in the world? How is Google trying to accomplish their goals of organizing the world’s information?
There is also discussion on the controversial aspects of Google’s business such as privacy of search history and book scanning.
This is a great documentary on the eight year old company that went from a dorm room idea to a multi billion dollar media and advertising conglomerate.
There is a bit of Google bashing going on in this. Not so much bashing – but inquiries on how the algorithms work. There are questions about Google’s intentions and whether results could possibly (if they wanted) be biased. Another focus for the video is privacy – since Google knows your search history. Google knows more about you than you may know so there is a certain level of trust that required by its users. Are they Big Brother? Marissa Meyer says no.
There is also discussion of the controversial issue of Google’s book search. The goal is to digitize the world’s books to make them available online and searchable. The Internet Archive wants Google to join them – they won’t because of proprietary technology (their digitizing robot). The Google Book Search product manager seemed a bit flustered as he stuttered on questions relayed from the Internet Archive director.
What do you think about the ethics of Google? Do you trust them? Are they just another corporation that wishes to monetize the world’s information? Is Google the next monopoly?
I’d probably let Google hire me.
