In fact, I this post will most likely be the only post that I will write with this software. I know I have been bashing Microsoft a lot lately but they really do deserve it with the release of lackluster copycat products.
If you haven’t heard, Microsoft just released Windows Live Writer (Windows only) for bloggers. They finally sucked it up and gave in to XML-RPC allowing them the ability to post to multiple blogging platforms. I was surprised to see them open up and not just allow posting to MSN Spaces.
The interface is essentially Microsoft Word (which I have grown to dislike) with a few blogging specific tools / menus included. The only original / cool feature I found was the ‘Insert Map’ option (see map below)
The default picture insertion only gives you the option of selecting from your local file system. You have to use a special menu item to use pictures from the web, after which the only option is entering a URL. Hyperlink insertion does give you the option of choosing a ‘rel’ attribute, but the only options are ‘tag’ and ‘no-follow’.
The sidebar provides limited management which is not near as good of tool as Wordpress’s dashboard.
And, ironically the built in spell check finds the term ‘blogger’ to be a misspelled item.

Oh, and in case you were wondering about the quality of HTML that is generated, here is a clue:
My recommendation: don’t bother. Get Flock.
