Too many applications, specifically media access applications, far too often want to perform a scan to find media. What happened to the option for selecting a specified folder? Why have inconvenient wizards taken over all application setups?

I think the scan is a valuable tool for a lot of users, but I guarantee for most power users it causes an inconvenience. We have organized hard drives and network shares for which our media is distributed. I do not want my entire hard drive scanned because there are files I don’t wish to be included. For instance, Picasa will add album art, images for websites I am working on, etc. That is not what I want - I have a specific folder (network share) for which I want Picasa to look for pictures.

Many music applications do the same thing (iTunes, Windows Media Player) and I do not want that. I want to point it to my music network drive and that’s the only folder I want it to scan.

I think wizards are great for the audience they target. But too often they are forgetting my favorite button - “Advanced Setup…”. Give me that and I’ll take care of it on my own.
