37Signals has enjoyed quite the ride in becoming everybody’s favorite WASP. But as people have watched their success there have been many people who want to jump on and ride with them. Awhile back I did an interview with Chris Busse (new website) who is building third party tools using the Basecamp API. Now we have people who are building clones of what 37Signals have created. activeCollab is a hosted copy of 37S’s flagship product, Basecamp.
activeCollab is an easy to use, web based, open source collaboration and project management tool. Set up an environment where you, your team and your clients can collaborate on active projects using a set of simple, functional tools. 100% free!
activeCollab – open source project management and collaboration tool.
It will be interesting to see if and what kind of response comes from 37Signals. It’s nice to see competition in this area as it was inevitable and will most likely produce better quality products. I doubt 37Signals will stagger at all as the brand they have created is stronger than free alternatives.
I plan on running activeCollab as soon as I move my server to the new house. Will let you know how it works then.

I have just changed my basecamp subscription down from $49 to free and am happily hosting my own data using activecollab. I think this is going to help a lot of people.

It will be interesting when someone builds a mechanism using the Basecamp API to pull their data from basecamp to transfer to activeCollab.
