Now that Microsoft’s .NET platform is being discussed in the trenches as a viable alternative to popular frameworks like PHP and RoR in the Web 2.0 landscape, here is where you should start your learning journey.
If you thought developing for the next generation of the .NET framework would cost you an arm and a leg, it doesn’t. It’s free. If you are a web developer, download Visual Web Developer Express. You can download SQL Server Express in addition (it’s actually a apart of the VWDE installation) and have a database driven web app completed in twenty minutes after successful installation. Or, if you want to jump into other languages that run on top of the .NET 2.0 framework, you can get IDE’s for Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual J#, and Visual C++. Just check out Microsoft’s Express website for more details and download information.
Once you have downloaded your Web Developer tools, navigate your way over to ASP.Net’s unofficially official website. Here you will find great tools and tutorials for beginning ASP.Net development. Subscribe to the latest articles here. And subscribe to ASP.Net’s bloggers OPML here.
Now if you aren’t like me and do not want to jump into anything right away, or if you don’t believe me how cool ASP.Net is then check out the following videos. If you are new to ASP.Net development or are experienced chances are one of these videos will show you something you do not know. They really demonstrate the ease and power of this next generation of ASP. And, if you want AJAX, we got AJAX. Check out ajaxpro.info. That is the AJAX toolkit I prefer to use in our development.
So, sit back, watch the vids and enjoy less stressful and more productive web development.

1Neat. What I’d like to know is what do you think is better? RoR or ASP.Net? I’m just beginning to learn RoR, but maybe I should reconsider?

2I would consider both as they both have their advantages and their disadvantages. I like ASP.Net / C# because I feel I have more control as a developer and the .NET Framework takes care of a lot of redunancies for you. But, I think it boils down to personal preference.
I suggest jumping into both. Whichever you catch on to first is likely to be your best choice.
