Wizlite | Collaborative Page Highlighting

Check Out WizliteWizlite is a very cool idea. This is an idea I had about a year ago and I am happy to see it implemented. The idea came about for me when doing some group research for a startup. We started sharing information and links via basecamp and backpack and although it worked it was missing something. For instance if I sent a colleague a link to an example legal document because I wanted him to check out a specific item, he would have to read through all forty pages to find what I had wanted him to read.

In comes WizLite — A collaborative page highlighting tool. To use the tool you can either use a bookmarklet or an extension (Firefox). Highlights can be private, public, or shared with a group. So, for instance I could spend a few hours one day doing research for some articles I am working on as well as a new Simplifive product. I could highlight all kinds of stuff and let TJ just see the highlights for the product we are researching. Then, I could reference my article research as private.

Like I said, great idea. Unfortunately there are several drawbacks. First of all there’s no tagging or categorizational methods. If I’m doing research for four different articles and I go through and highlight sections for each I will have no way to differentiate which is which. Also the implementation is not as intuitive as I would like it to be in order to make it useful on a day-to-day basis. And, the design of the WizLite page is less than desirable.

All in all, great idea but poor implementation. Hopefully they can revamp the process and their design to create a much better experience.
