As you may or may not know 37Signals has launched their new book entitled ‘Getting Real’. If you have read their blog you will find their book is a summation of their posts on their business and development methodologies.
The following chapters are included:
1) Intro
2) The Starting Line
3) Stay Lean
4) Priorities
5) Feature Selection
6) Process
7) The Organization
8) Staffing
9) Interface Design
10) Code
11) Words
12) Pricing and Signup
13) Promotion
All in all the content is very good for anyone in the web industry despite your position. As the site says,
“Who should read the book?
Anyone working on a web app including entrepreneurs, designers, programmers, executives, or marketers will find value and inspiration in this book.”
I agree. There are specific people that I have worked for in the past that desperately need to grasp certain details within this book.
One thing I am not the happiest with is the online-only release. They have provided it in PDF only format at $19 a pop. According to a recent post by Jason on their blog, they have sold over 1,750 copies thus far in the two days since launch. Also mentioned was that 10% of these sold were the $49 site license copy. According to my calculations they have made just over $40,000 in two days.
This is good for them and an interesting conundrum for the publishing industry. It just shows creating a community around content is the best way to disintermediate the publishing industry. If a small shop like 37s doesn’t need their help, who does?
