microsoft old vs new

With the release of Windows Vista Microsoft has finally stepped up it’s design. I think this shows positive growth for Microsoft as it tries to create its new image.

Check out their old image vs Windows new image

css mania!

I’ve been over checking out the new redesign of CSS Mania all day long. Its amazing. They did a great job as far as design and content. My favorite thing about the site is how its categorized. They have broken it down to categories like weblogs, technology, companies etc.

Its a great way to view how people are getting much more creative with their css designs. I particularly like it becuse I can view corporate sites and see how they are implementing css and I’m happy to report, more and more are finally moving away from table based layouts. Now if we could just get them all to do it, we’d live in a perfect world.

Go over and check it out. Just beware, you might spend hours thumbing through the galleries. :)

defensive design

I’ve recently been reading ‘Defensive Design for the Web‘ from 37Signals. The book primarily discusses how to improve the user experience in the case something goes wrong or there is a malfunction. That is why I put together a nice error handling page for simplifive.

Here’s a good example of defensive design in the real world from my water heater:

Error handling on a website is essential to the user experience. For example, a simple 404 page can do wonders: 1) save a user from leaving your site 2) help you in reporting the problem 3) redirect users to ’sticky’ sections of your site. You may think you don’t need a 404 handler because your such a great web developer. Well, get off your horse and check your log files. Then you will come to realize that you may as well.

it is a real nickel

Not to put down Unicef or anything because it is a great cause. But I recently received an interesting piece of direct mail from them:

Hopefully it’s quite obvious what the problem is and thus I will not waste your time by explaining it. And yes, it is a real nickel.
