Firefox, Flock, and Opera should not be worried. Internet Explorer still sucks.

I downloaded the ‘Developer Preview’ of IE7 (Beta 2). I had previously used the Beta 1 for an hour or so. This one has added features. All of which can be found in Firefox.

Tabbed Browsing: IE’s tabs are UGLY. They copied the same commands (ctrl-t) to open. I do not like how the tabs that aren’t in focus are shadowed so much you cannot read what they are.

RSS Feeds: IE7 added the new ’subscribe’ button in the toolbar. When a page has an available feed, you can click on it and subscribe to the feed. This is the same exact functionality Firefox has in the address bar where you can add ‘Live Bookmarks’.

The feed organizational tool is bad too. It shows a list of feeds inline with no hierarchical organization or labelling system. And, no ‘river of news’ possibility. Richard McManus claims IE7 as a threat to RSS aggregators and Mozilla. Sure IE7 may help RSS go mainstream but it will not steal users from aggregators. Nor will it steal any Firefox users. Sure, most people don’t use IE out of spite but in reality, Firefox is the better browser.

The best feature is the ‘Tab Browser’. If you click the link (pointed out below), every tab that is open is minimized and a thumbnail view of the page is shown allowing the user to select which page they want to view. Congrats to the IE team for some originality.

Also in some preliminary tests, the rendering of web pages is the same. It appears they have not yet adopted web standards as they have promised. Hopefully they have yet to rebuild the rendering engine because I see no difference between it and IE6.

Granted, it’s only a ‘Beta 2 Developer Preview’. But it has a lot of work to become a Firefox killer. Now, time to uninstall it.
