ning not dead

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Michael Arrington was clearly wrong when he prematurely declared Ning as dead. Or, this could be a lame attempt by Ning and Arrington to use viral marketing to get Ning back on people’s minds.

I say this because, coincidentally, each and every of Michael’s concerns were addressed by Ning only days later in the new release. Read Michael’s concerns here. Here is the email I received from Ning this morning:

As a registered user on Ning, I want to share with you some great new features we?ve added in the past few weeks.

New at Ning:

* The Beta Period is Over! You can now jump straight in to cloning, coding and creating your own social web apps from the thousands running on Ning today. Clone and run any social web app on Ning for FREE.

* Run Your Own Google or Yahoo Ads For FREE. Run Google or Yahoo ads for FREE on any of your social web apps on Ning and keep what you make. After you’ve created your social web app, just follow the “Make Premium” button on the Ning homepage.

* Map Your Domain Name and Hide Your Source Code. You can now map your own domain name on top of your Ning app. You can also hide your source code. Just follow the “Make Premium” button on the Ning homepage.

* Enjoy the New Ning Sidebar. In the first of several style upgrades we have in the pipeline, the new Ning Sidebar takes up less vertical space while providing more information.

* Faster Performance. We’ve made substantial performance improvements to our little service which you?ll notice as both an app creator and user.

Coming Soon:

* More Features to Make Ning Even Easier and Fun to Use
* More Social Apps to Clone and Run
* Build New Social Apps from Scratch without Any Coding
* Support for Ruby and Other Programming Languages

Go ahead and give it a spin!

- Gina Bianchini, CEO & Co-Founder, Ning

Thanks Gina, maybe I will go give it a spin.

@Media

I think along with many others, I’d love to attend @media 2006 in London. What I’d take home from listening to the speakers alone would be worth the money. This year some hot topics include: Bulletproof Web Design by Dan Cederholm (simplebits). CSS3: Fact of Fiction? by Andy Budd (clearleft.com), Roger Johansson (456 Berea Street), and the amazing Dave Shea (CSS Zen Garden).

Other notible speakers include:
Andy Clarke
Jon Hicks
Molly E. Holzschlag
Eric Meyer
Cameron Moll

I really hope they record the conference and produce podcasts of all the great sessions. I’m so jealous I’m not able to attend. Maybe next year.

yahoo and searchfox

How come Michael Arrington gets the scoop on this news? Everyone knows he’s a Bloglines user. I am the Searchfox RSS advocate. Anyway, this is some interesting news. I am very interested in knowing if Yahoo will implement Searchfox’s technology or if they just want the staff (almost all of whom have their doctorates).

To date, Yahoo has acquired the three of the four web services I use the most (Flickr, Del.icio.us, Searchfox) … GMail being the fourth. I think Yahoo has made its motives clear and are definitely going after the ‘Web 2.0′ market. Soon I will have to decide whether to switch from Google to Yahoo as my ‘portal’ of choice. If only Yahoo’s interface wasn’t so damn ugly.

Yahoo Acquires SearchFox Assets: “Reliable sources are reporting that SearchFox, which announced that it will be shutting down as of January 25, 2006, has sold its assets to Yahoo. At least some of the employees have moved over to Yahoo as well.” Michael Arrington, Techcrunch

On a side note, I have been enjoying Google Reader with the recent absense of Searchfox RSS. It took some time to get used to but I am really starting to like it.

CSS Typography

Here is an excellent article by Garrett Dimon for Digital Web about typography and CSS.

CSS Typography: “The finicky world of CSS isn?t the best match for the precise art of typography, but you can do more to improve the readability and beauty of your Web pages than you think. Defy the typographic limitations of the Web and refine your design with a wide range of techniques presented by Garrett Dimon.”
